As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

Prompt: Something I enjoyed most about the class is that we would present our assignments to the class. Ann assignment that I found most engaging would have to be our mask assignment where we put characteristics about us on the mask and then present it to the class. The aspect in which I felt connected with would be the poetry part because I find poetry very beautiful because it allows people to express themselves through words. An area I feel like I would need support would be my writing because I like to write but I want my writing to get better as time goes on.  Summary: Today in class we presented our final project in class to end the semester.  Reflection: Today in class I learned about different poems and their meanings.

Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt: One tradition that matters a lot to me and my family is the Day of the Dead. It matters because it is the only day where our family and ancestors come to visit us in spirit. We get to honor our family generations every year.  The food that is served with their altar is the food that they enjoyed eating when they were still here. We have a bread called Pan de Muerto and it is believed that the families that come and visit enjoy eating it.  Summary: Today in class we recited our poems' for tomorrow and did the blog post.  Reflection: Today in class I learned about the new blog posts and learned my whole poem.

How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt: Holidays now that I am older are more grown up now. When I was a kid I remember the excitement of wanting to open the presents I got but had to wait. Now that I'm older I can open them on December 24 because I'm older. I would be so excited when I saw all the toys I got as a kid. So now every time I open my presents I'm happy but I would miss the excitement I had as a kid. Now that I'm older I would love to go back and be a kid again feeling all my emotions during the holidays.  Summary: Today in class we worked on new vocabulary and completed the exercises.  Reflection: Today in class I learned the definitions of the new vocabulary words.

Write about something you’ve outgrown but still miss.

Prompt: Something that i have outgrown and still miss would be getting toys on birthdays, or Christmas. I miss it because of the joy it brought me. I remember getting toys every year and i would love to show my friends. I remember when i stopped getting the gifts at the age of 8. I was told i was already too old to be playing with toys. After that I started getting things that were appropriate for my age.  Summary: Today in class we took a test on the vocabulary words we have been learning. We also completed an assignment about our new poem called "Refugee in America"  Reflection: Today in class I learned what i got on my vocabulary quiz. I also learned about a new poem called "Refugee in America" by Langston Hughes.

Write about something that you can't stop thinking about.

Prompt: Something that i can't stop thinking about would be if we are really the only living species in the universe. The reason being because the universe is very big and it grows everyday making new galaxies. Many people have different opinions about it. It depends on your religion and beliefs. Some people think that we are the only living species and others don't.

Reflection: Today during class we presented our masks. I learned about different peoples passions and dreams that they have.

Write about the best gift you have received.

Prompt: The best gift I received was when I got my pink penguin which is a stuffed animal. It was the best gift because it would keep me company when i felt alone as a kid or when i just wanted a friend. I still have the stuffed animal to this day. Every time i see it brings good memories to me of my childhood and sometimes i wish i could go back.  Summary: Today in class we worked on new vocabulary, and turned in our mask on canvas. Reflection: Today in class I learned about the new vocabulary words.

After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt: The masks in the short film represent the struggle of people when they try to fit in somewhere where they might not. A moment from the film that stood out to me was when the girl had a white or light pink mask on and she took it off to reveal a purple one and then she goes up to a group of kids with also purple masks on. This stood out to me because it represents how some people change many times just to fit in with others. I want my mask to reveal that I am proud to be who I am and that I am someone who works hard and never gives up. So I don't have to change to fit in.  Summary: Today in class we went over what our final will be and finished our masks. Reflection: Today in class I learned what we need to do for our final.

In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

Prompt: I'm proud to be Mexican because we are hard workers, we don't give up, even when people judge us for being different. They think since we are Mexican we are dumb, dirty, etc. But I would say that we aren't dumb or dirty we are all smart in our own ways. We get dirty because we work hard and never give up no matter the circumstances. People judge without trying to imagine what my people go through everyday. So that's why i'm proud to be Mexican.  Summary: Today in class we read and annotated the poem "I, Too" and started on our mask that describes us. Reflection: Today in class I learned about the poem "I, Too."

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

Prompt:  A time when I chose a path that looked cool or fun would be when I would sneak out of my house at night. I knew it wasn't a smart or responsible path but i did because I thought it would make me look cool. I did it because I wanted people to see different things like if i was also a bad kid and belonged. I would do it because I was influenced by my friends at the time. Now I see that what I did was wrong and irresponsible of me. I don't do it anymore because I can get very serious consequences if I were to do it.   Summary: Today in class we read and annotated the poem "We Real Cool." Reflection: Today in class I learned what is cool and what isn't.

Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt: During the break Something memorable that happened to me was hanging with family I had not seen in a while. It had been 5 years since I last saw my aunt and cousins so I was really grateful I got to see them this year for Thanksgiving. I loved being able to help my family and cook thanksgiving food for them. We cooked ribs, pasta, mash potatoes, apple pie, and roasted vegetables and many more. In the end they all loved the food and i got to watch my family play games and laugh together.  Summary: Today in class we worked on our new vocabulary. Reflection: Today in class i learned the definitions of our new vocabulary.
